How long should the duration of my film be to qualify?

We currently accept projects between 1-40 minutes including credits.

What genres are acceptable?

BFF accepts all scripted narrative genres, we do not accept music videos or documentaries.

Question 3

My film is in a foreign language, can you accept this?"

Accepted Answer

We’re proud to be an international short film festival and welcome all foreign language projects. However, please ensure your short film has English subtitles for the purposes of our screening.

How do I submit my film?

All submissions are handled via FilmFreeway. We don’t accept submissions by post or email. Click here to submit via FilmFreeway.

Do you accept screenplays/treatments?

We no longer accept short screenplay submissions. Unfortunately, we don’t handle treatments for short films.

I live outside the United Kingdom, can I submit my short film?"

Accepted Answer

You certainly can! Breakout Film Festival is open for all nationalities.

Question 7

Does the festival provide waiver codes for free entry?

Accepted Answer

Submissions are handled via FilmFreeway for a small submission fee. Submissions Fees go towards judging your short film and running the live screening event for the selected short films. We don’t provide free waiver codes.

Can I submit my short film without FilmFreeway?

All submissions are handled via FilmFreeway only.

Question 9

I have a music video, can I submit?"

Accepted Answer

We don’t accept music videos for competition. However, if your short film is a fictional narrative musical we are happy to accept.

I have a short documentary, can I submit?"

Accepted Answer

Unfortunately not. Breakout Film Festival is for short narrative films only.

Question 11

Will I receive feedback regarding my short film?

Due to the amount of submissions we receive each month, we are unable to provide individual feedback for each submission.

Question 12

I don’t have permission to use a soundtrack in my short film, can I still participate?"

Accepted Answer

Please ensure you have permission to use all aspects of your short film including music. We’re unable to screen short films that are a breach of copyright.

Question 13

What is the deadline for submissions?

Submissions for each monthly contest close midnight on the last day of the month.

Question 14

Can I submit an episode from a web-series or a pilot for a TV show?

Accepted Answer

We accept single episodes of web-series as long it runs as a short narrative episode. We don’t accept pilots for TV shows.

Do you accept commercial/advertisement short videos?

Sadly we’re not able to accept commercials/advertisements.

When will I be notified if my short film has been selected?

Notifications are sent around the 20th of the following month.
