Q&A with Marc Lesperut

Marc’s short film ‘Just Friends’ is an official selection for the 2020 festival.

What was the inspiration behind making this film?

The inspiration behind this film was to portray the ups and downs in a love relationship. I wanted to explore the conflicting feelings one may experience when a relationship ends. By using a voice message one can identify and perhaps comprehend the pain on both sides.

What did you learn from the experience making the film?

I learned how paramount it is to explore and work relentlessly with the actors in order to achieve specific emotions. When directing actors one has to step back and arrange a profound dialogue where both parts contribute to the story.

How has the film been received?

The film has been very well received in many international film festivals as well as screenings in many countries. It has been awarded in numerous festivals and as a director I've been thrilled to receive such positive feedback from the audience.

What do you love the most about the filmmaking process?

I enjoy every aspect of the filmmaking process. I always aspire to build up meaningful relationships with everyone I work with on every single project. I remember back in film school a teacher mentioned that a movie would never be possible without the minds and effort of the entire crew. Making a movie is still a collective exercise and I hope it stays the same way.

What is your advice to filmmakers making their debut short film?

Be prepared to constantly rewrite your ideas, be patient and don't take yourself too seriously.

What are you up to next?

I am currently working in the preproduction of two music videos in Spain and also developing the script for my next short film.
